Fashion is all about breaking the rules.Taking risks are all apart of having fun with fashion. Without controversial clothing fashion would be boring, and style would not exist. In the past women wore skirts and dresses and men wore pants and shirts. And that is how fashion worked for hundreds of years. In modern day society fashion is rapidly changing. Every season designers come out with new collections and ideas. Right now, opposite gender clothing is a really popular trend. Menswear is inspiring womenswear, and womenswear is inspiring menswear. For example, mens jackets have become shorter and narrower, slightly resembling a woman's jacket. Olivia...

Unfortunately we had no choice but to let go of Olivia today, just five short days after she first became ill. We still don't know the cause (it might have been bacterial, fungal, or a toxin), but the effect was quite simply devastating -- her liver completely shut down, and no manner of drug nor treatment was going to bring it back. I'm still in a state of shock at this twist my life has taken in less than a week. But I suppose you never expect tragedies, nor can you ever prepare yourself for one.

Saying goodbye to her this morning was one of the harder things I have ever had to endure, but I know that in the end Dave and I made the right decision by ending her suffering rather than needlessly pursuing life-extending (but not life-enhancing) treatments. The process was made somewhat easier by a wonderfully supportive and incredibly gifted veterinarian and staff. I know they did all they could for her...and I was amazed to see them all in tears as well at the end. But then again, Olivia was (and I don't think I'm overstating things here) just about the cutest dog out there, with the personality to match. I wish I could have brought her home with me at the end of this ordeal, but I know that just wasn't meant to be.

Olivia taught me so many things in the 3 short years I had her. She taught me how to take care of someone else, someone totally dependent on me. She taught me greater patience, especially in her puppy phase. She taught me to take joy in the simple things: food, sun...feathers. Beyond these lessons, she gave me so much joy and comfort. My hope is at the end she knew this, and that she knew how much she was loved -- not just by Dave and I, but by so many other family and friends.

I have often been accused of loving her overly much, but to quote my father "if you don't love 'em, what's the point?" And I have to agree. Despite the pain Dave and I are going through now, it's worth every second I got to spend with her. I had hoped to enjoy Olivia for years to come, but I know that I was lucky to have her, if only for a short while.

St. Francis of Assisi believed that all animals, and not just humans, have souls. Because all living things are an expression of God, to St. Francis, they were considered sacred and to be cared for. And I would like to think that's true. For we are all God's creatures, and His heart and His heavenly home have room for the lot of us. If that's the case, then I know for certain that Olivia is there now, playing with my childhood dog Gretel and in good hands until I can be with her again.

I used to joke that Olivia was the puppy of my dreams, the puppy of my heart. And she will be in my dreams and in my heart forever. I know that in time Dave and I will get another dachshund -- I'm just a dog (specifically, dachshund) lover. But no dog will ever replace her: she was, after all, my Olivsita, my Chub-buns, my baby.

In the fashion world colours are constantly categorized as being 'in' or 'out. This fall aubergine, which is a combination of dark purple and red, is very in style. The natural light is best, since other light sources can change the way the colours appear. Have a friend or relative help you decide which colours look best. Colours that look the best on you should emphasize your eyes and hair colour. And your overall complexion should look healthy and bright, a colour that does not complement you tends to make your skin look dull. From this experiment you should learn what hues look best on you, and whether warmer or cooler colours compliment your skin tone. Once you can have a clear understanding of which colours you like, it will making shopping for clothing and putting together outfits much easier.

Oco Agate with a Twist of Amber Navy Mix

Olivia Update

After a horrible day yesterday, when every sign pointed towards me having to say goodbye to Olivia today, we have received some very positive news this morning. Olivia has started to respond to treatments, her liver is recovering and, while we're not out of the woods yet, the vet is "cautiously optimistic".

I will still count it as a tremendous blessing if I get to take Olivia home after this ordeal, but this is the first real sign of hope that I've had since she fell sick on Saturday afternoon. And, for now, I'll cling to it. Many thanks for all your sweet comments and notes. I have been reminded how lucky I am to have such amazing friends, family, coworkers and blog readers.

In the interim, please continue to pray for Olivia's recovery. And of course for my cousin Patrick, who continues his fight in NICU after suffering serious head trauma during a terrible car accident two and a half weeks ago. A family friend has been sending around daily devotionals for Patrick (and for my cousin KB who is serving in Afghanistan as a surgeon). Today's was particularly poignant for me.

Psalm 23 is one of the most famous passages in the Bible, and its first 3 verses read as follows:

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,

3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.

In The Message, Eugene Peterson paraphrases verse 3 in a way that really spoke to me today:

True to your word,

you let me catch my breath

and send me in the right direction.

I do not know yet whether we are past the storm or merely in its eye, but today I am grateful for this moment of calm to catch my breath and collect my thoughts.

Designs for the Season in Polymer Clay

A not so new medium being used by artists in the jewelry industry is polymer clay because of its pliable, bendable and sculpting polymer compound or synthetic modeling material, thus it is not really true clay. True clay has fine particles of silicate suspended in water, whereas polymer clay is fine particles of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) suspended in plasticizer, but it can be used much like clay.

Polymer clay is formulated from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), dyes or pigments and plasticizer to keep it soft until heat cured. It is an acrylic art material and there are many brands available in the United States. All the polymer clay brands have been individually tested and certified as non-toxic art materials. Brands vary in how hard or soft they feel at the beginning of use and the softer clays are more brittle when cured, and the firm clays are more durable after they are heat cured. The working properties vary between brands and become a designer’s personal choice. Some brands or colors within brands contain white mineral clay that makes colors opaque; others contain mica that gives it a shimmer and shine to the clay. All polymer clays are thermal set plastics, meaning they are hardened with heat and do not become soft again after curing. Before being cured in an oven, clays are thermally reactive and become hard when cool and soft when warm.

What makes polymer clay special is its versatility for anyone who wants to let their imagination run wild. With the dozens of colors choices and a designer can blend clays together like paints into canes to make any color palette they desire. Since the color is inherent in the particles, you can also work two or more colors together without blending them, if you prefer, for special effects such as cane marbling or stoning. The clay's pliability and ductility let you use techniques from other mediums such as glasswork, textile arts and sculpture. And polymer clay doesn't dry out, so you can sculpt and form it without worrying about a time limit.

In these new designs we feature polymer clay beads; the necklaces are quite lightweight and another alternative for people who don’t like the big chunky styles seen in many jewelry designs today.

Canadian Fashion Designer

During our fashion class's theory week we've learned about a few great Canadian designers. This sparked my interest since many people are not familiar with Canadian designers. One very successful Canadian fashion designer we learned about is Alfred Sung. Sung was born in Shanghai, China and was the eldest of eight children. Originally he wanted to become an artist, but at 17 his parents sent him to Paris to study fashion design. After graduating from Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, he moved to New York to study at the infamous Parsons School of Design. After graduation he work in the New York fashion industry for a while, but then moved to Toronto in 1972. In Toronto he worked as a fashion designer for a Spadina Avenue company before building his own business.
Sung's garments are often referred to as classic pieces. Aside from clothing he has also designed jewelery, bridal wear,watches, eye wear, fragrances, and belts. Sung also designed his own home decor line which includes furniture, bedding, kitchen products ect. Sung has also launched a line of moderately priced women's fashions for Zellers. Over the years Sung has created timeless pieces that work for almost anyone.

The love story between Audrina and Justin starts from the first season of “The Hills” and it seems to be end in the final episode, this time for good. However, the fans of the show can’t stop wondering if this time is for good or not. Justin and Audrina have been through so many break ups that no one can count them anymore.

Advice for New Moms: Home to Three Duncan Boys

Hi guys, I’m Lakeitha from Home to three Duncan Boys and I’m here today sharing my baby must haves with Averill for her little “munchkin”!

Munchkin products are my absolute favorite. They make a wide variety of baby accessories that I think are perfect for new moms! Plus the color combinations are just too darn cool to pass up! Here are a few of my favorites…

For Feeding:

Breastfeeding may be ideal for many moms, but it didn’t work out for me with my three. So when it came to purchasing baby bottles I opted for glass! Glass bottles are the way to go especially when it comes to cleaning and not to mention the concerns of the chemicals found in plastic bottles. I’m a little old school when it comes to washing and sterilizing my babies bottles. Wash with soapy water and place them all in a large stainless steal pot with water and let them boil!

Now, washing these bottles are made easy with Munchkins bottle brushes! They have three different brushes.

These are my favorite! They have a soap dispenser made into them and with the press of a button, you have just the right amount of soap to wash a cup or bottle!

Next on the feeding list are these lovelies!

Again since I bottle fed, the powdered formula dispenser was very convenient. And if you are breastfeeding, they come in hand when the need for cheerios comes! When the baby gets older, I used the fresh food feeder for different fruits (An absolute hit with the Duncan boys!). And lets not forget sippy cups! Around 6 months I introduced my boys to them and I started with the trainer cups. The handles are perfect for baby’s little hands! By the time they reach 9 months they are ready for the handle-less cups that are of course spill proof;-)

Diapering:

I’m not going to get into what type of diapers to use because I used disposables and I wish I could go back and use cloth! Not only would they have saved us money and are eco friendly, but they make some really great cloth/reusable diapers now!

Averill, if you decide to use disposable diapers on occasions (like traveling), these are a must!

The diaper bag dispensers hold little bags that you put soiled diapers in and they hold in odor. And the nursery fresheners are like sachets for baby! just place then somewhere discretely in the nursery and they will freshen the room!

Bath Time:

OMG, I don’t know if I can say enough how great these bath toys are! My boys have the alphabet and numbers. They also have the little squirt toys too. They literally play until they are wrinkled! The letters and numbers are foam and they ‘magically” stick on the wall of the tub (no worries, they stick because of the water) where you can put together words. And the clean up is easy thanks to the frog holder. And once you “scoop” them up, just rinse them with clean water and they are ready for the next bath time!

I have often written about clothing or designers prevalent in the fashion industry, but I have never given a full overview of what exactly the fashion industry consists of. The fashion industry consists of four different levels. Production of raw materials, production of goods by designers, retail sales, and advertisement and promotion. During the early 20th century the creation of the sewing machine and other technology, sped up the garment making process. This allowed for retailers like department stores to flourish. Clothing became mass produced, and were sold at fixed prices. Previous to this, most people had their clothing custom made, or made their clothing themselves. Today the fashion industry has grown to be one of the largest industries in the world, employing millions.
Fashion journalism is one of the most important aspects of keeping the fashion industry strong. Fashion journalism includes commentary and critiques of fashion in the media. These media sources include television, magazines, newspapers, and the internet. Overall, the media is responsible for spreading the word of what is new in the fashion industry, and keeps the industry running.

Update (7pm): Many thanks for all the sweet messages and comments. We had to do a plasma transfusion today, but fortunately Olivia has responded very well to treatment so far and her vitals and behavior are both markedly better. We won't be out of the woods until tomorrow when we can do some more blood work, but this is a very hopeful development.

Please excuse the lack of postings this week. My darling dachsund Olivia has become suddenly and extremely ill. The vet is saying she is suffering from acute liver failure and now the job is to ascertain the cause (many of which are, thankfully, treatable). In the meantime though, to say I'm distracted (okay, distraught) right now is an immense understatement.

Sweatshops

In fashion class we have recently started learned about sweatshops, and their impact on the modern day world. The garment industry is one of the largest industries in and world, therefore cheap labor is what this business strives on. A sweatshop is defined as a factory where workers are treated poorly. This may include low salaries, long hours of work with no breaks, and physical or emotional abuse. The problem is, most companies own millions of factories around the world, and it is hard to specify which factories are sweatshops and which are not. Sweatshop workers are mainly women and children. Almost 90% of workers are young girls or women. Women are hired since it is acceptable for other employers to rape them, if they are not working to the set standard. Workers are also paid extremely low wages, in a worst case scenario a worker may make as little as six cents an hour. The worst sweatshop runners include Disney, The Gap, Guess, J.C Penny, Nike, Wal-Mart, and Victoria's Secret. These are just a few of the thousands of companies that rely on sweatshops to produce their garments. This proves that most garments that are mass produced are made in sweatshops. Overall, this makes it difficult for consumers to purchase clothes that have not been manufactured in sweatshops.

Dsquared :)

It's time to talk about some of Canada's finest designers! Dsquared was founded by twin Toronto born brothers, Dean and Dan Caten. Over the past decade their success has rapidly grown, and they are two of Canada's best known fashion designers. They design for men and women, and have also launched their own footwear, cosmetic, and fragrance lines. The pair's designs have been worn by celebrities including Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Madonna. Their previous fashion shows have been opened and closed by artists like Rihanna and Bill Kaulitz, the lead singer of Tokio Hotel.
The Dsquared Fall/Winter 2010 fashion show, in my opinion is a perfect example of what a fashion show is supposed to be like. It was futuristic, there were angry looking models, intense music, and a creative theme. The fashion show told a story, it was like watching a movie. The clothes were also amazing. The red and black colour scheme is a classic, and seems to be fairly popular this season. I like the fact that the clothes were not over the top extravagant, but were brought to life with accessories and a pop of red. The elevator was also a really cool addition to the show, and the entire set was amazing. The show really flowed the models, music, and set worked together to pull off a great performance. Overall, I loved the show and I am excited to see what Dsquared has in store for the future. :)

The verdict is in....

Dave and I went to our anatomy ultrasound today and are happy to report (first and foremost) that everything looks great and....that we're expecting a boy in early March! Time to launch the nursery design efforts in earnest.

In the meantime though, and (unfortunately) on a more somber note, I ask that you keep my cousin Carol, her husband and their darling daughter in your prayers and thoughts today. Patrick was in a serious car accident 10 days ago where he suffered serious head trauma. He's undergoing another surgery today to try and relieve mounting pressure in his brain. I hope and pray that the surgery is successful and Patrick can finally begin the long process of healing.

When I Grow Up

What Not to Wear on TLC, is by far one of my favorite shows of all time. Not only is the show awesome, but the hosts/stylists Stacey London and Clinton Kelly are amazing at what they do. I have always said, when I grow up I want to be like Stacey London. She has the perfect job. She gets to work with beautiful designer clothes all day long, and gets paid for it. Plus, she promotes inner beauty as well as outer beauty. She believes if you look your best, it will boost your self confidence, resulting in success. Not only is she a stylists, but she tours around the States giving self-esteem lectures. And also supports many Cancer Research organizations including, The American Cancer Society. What I really like about her, is the fact that she promotes inner beauty and self-esteem. When you think of a fashion stylist, you would assume that they are more concerned about what you look like on the outside, instead of what's on the inside. That is why I admire the work Stacey has done.
