A Different Type of Jasper

This pendant is a really different type of jasper from the United Kingdom, it is called snail jasper. The background is a shade of gray with some white mixed in; then ‘snail marks’ are the black lines throughout the pendant. It has been cut in a large round, with a smooth back and slopped sides with a high polish on both sides.

I’ve mixed the pendant with smooth round black agates that are caged in silver wire; between are a mixture of black and clear faceted rondelle and bicone crystals. This is a lovely design in the fashion staple black/white mixed with grays; wear it to dress up that little black dress, an evening out or casually with any outfit.

Different Rainbow Pyrite Design

The highlight of this necklace is the large round rainbow pyrite pendant! I’ve highlighted it with bright gold non-tarnish silver wire; nicely blending with the white/dark gray background with flecks of golden pyrite. The base of the necklace is made from faceted rondelle sandy jasper, daisy spacers, smooth green/black ceramic beads, and a few faceted rondelles olive colored crystals. A nice round cut rainbow pyrite pendant that is accented with non-tarnish bright gold wire swirls.

Pyrite: Defense, prevention, protection from negativity, physical wholeness, memory.
Jaspers: Protection, nurturing, joy, awareness; balancing of physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual energies.

Rugged Earthy Jasper

Jasper is a massive opaque variety that is a mixture of chalcedony, quartz, and opal. The name comes from the Latin name for the stone, iaspis, which probably also referred to other types of chalcedony. Jasper is found as small veins and replacements in different metamorphic and sedimentary rock, and in cracks of volcanic rocks. It is fine-grained and colored by red and yellow iron oxides or green chlorite and actinolite.
Jasper was used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans who carved portraits and such ornamental objects as amulets. It was believed that a person wearing jasper would be protected from illness, especially stomach problems. It has traditionally been used as a gemstone for jewelry; pictured to the left is slabs of landscape/picture jasper.

In this design, these colorful jasper rondelles remind me of the southwest. They give an appearance of rugged earth caverns in shades of rusts, browns, creams, hints of yellow, green and blue. The perfect accent is this beautiful turquoise cross pendant in a lovely shade of blue/green and heavy veining in black/brown; the bail and wire work are of artistic non-tarnish silver wire. I’ve added in a few round turquoise stones that have light brown/tan veining and pewter metal barrel beads that have been etched, giving another flavor of southwest to this necklace design.

Jaspers: Protection, nurturing, joy, awareness; balancing of physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual energies.
Turquoise: Spiritual attunement, cleansing, healing, protection, valor, soothing, peace of mind, guidance through the unknown, romantic spontaneity.

Bold and Chic Jasper Cloisonne Crystals

This new design is more about the bold color and chic non-symmetrical design than anything else. I started with beautiful green jasper stones, capped with fancy gold shield caps. Then I added in stunning cloisonné beads and for a bold statement, brought in black faceted crystals and soft colors of topaz faceted hex crystals.

Turquoise & Jasper Redesign

Designing jewelry is interesting, knowing what to design that sells is an art. This lovely piece was originally a solid mixture of Turquoise and Landscape Picture Jasper; it got lots of compliments and people really loved it. However, it never really found a home and seemed to always be ‘missing something’.

Today, I took it out of inventory and played with it on my design board. I mixed it up even more by adding a bold Turquoise donut pendant that I wire wrapped in artistic non-tarnish brass wire. Instead of looping the necklace onto the pendant, I strung it as single independent strands from the ‘bail swirls’ of the pendant. I shortened the necklace and took at out some of the larger stones for a sleek look.

I think this design hits the mark, it is much better than the original design and I love the mix of Turquoise against the Landscape Picture Jasper.

Goldstone: Old World Folklore Stone

Goldstone is an unusual gemstone in that it is manmade from a type of glass with copper or copper salts in the presence of a reducing flame. Under the right oxidative conditions, the copper ions meld into the silica to produce the transparent bluish-green or red-brown colors. When the goldstone cools, the copper remains in an atomic isolation and becomes small crystalline clusters.
The most common form of goldstone gives the illusion of being reddish-brown, although in fact that color comes from the copper crystals and the glass itself is colorless. Some goldstone variants have an intensely-colored glass matrix, usually blue or violet, more rarely green, and a more silvery appearance to the suspended crystals, whose color may be partially masked by the glass or which may be based on different metals than copper like cobalt, manganese or chromium.

Old World Folklore
Goldstone has been around for centuries and was presumed discovered by accident in the 17th century Venice by the Miotti family. Old World folklore attributes the discovery of Goldstone from an old monastery where monks were trying to make gold out of other materials, specifically alchemy. Molten copper was tipped by accident into a crucible of molten glass and crystallized out in tiny bright triangular crystals and forming a melt from which objects with golden light could be formed. It has an alternate or folklore name of ‘Monk’s Gold’ or ‘Monkstone’ from this discover before it was named Goldstone due to the starry internal reflections of the stone.
Properties
Though Goldstone doesn’t have any associated birthstone or anniversary, it does however have some associated properties. Goldstone is associated with vitality, energy and the uplifting of a persons spirits. It is known to help to reduce tension and believed to be helpful in securing love, protection, riches and inspired diplomacy. It is found in the United States, India and Russia. Has a symbolic meaning for Ambition and Drive.
Blue Goldstone is a stone for wisdom and science
Red/Brownish Goldstone is a stone for physical stimulation

I came across some Goldstone recently that the dealer called “Bad Goldstone” because there are darker striations within the beads and not totally clear starry inclusions. Looking at these beads, I felt they were unique and would make great additions to a jewelry design. Though a very beautiful stone, I have partnered it with Peach Jasper, Cherry Quartz, and gold caged lampwork beads in black-pink-cream colors. It is available for purchase on my website along with many other unique and original natural gemstone jewelry designs.
